Privacy and security

A memory you can trust.

DejaVu remembers what you saw so you don’t have to. That only works if it is safe. Here is exactly how it protects you — and what it can’t do.

Our commitments

  • On this Mac, always

No server, no account, no cloud. Your memory never leaves your Mac unless you export it yourself.

  • No analytics in the app

The app has no telemetry, no analytics, no ads.

  • No audio

DejaVu never uses the microphone or system sound.

  • You decide

DejaVu starts only when you turn it on. The menu bar always shows whether it’s on, and it never stops without telling you.

  • Touch ID to look back

Remembering needs nothing from you; opening your memory needs Touch ID.

  • Yours to keep or delete

Export everything in open formats, or delete everything, at any time.

What is kept

Compressed pictures of your screen when something changes, and the text DejaVu reads in them, so you can search.

Never kept

  • Password managers, and anything on screen while you type a password
  • Private browsing windows
  • Banking and payment websites, from a built-in list you can extend
  • Video calls
  • Your keystrokes, the microphone and system sound
  • A locked screen or a sleeping Mac

To be honest: no filter is perfect. Something sensitive shown in an ordinary window can be kept. For those moments, pause DejaVu in one click.

How your memory is protected

Encrypted on this Mac

Your memory is stored encrypted on your Mac’s disk.

Opened with Touch ID

Search and the timeline stay locked until you open them with Touch ID, and lock again after a few minutes or when your screen locks.

A folder other apps can’t read

Your memory lives in DejaVu’s own folder, which macOS keeps other apps out of.

Nothing opens it behind your back

No hidden server, no back door, no shortcut that reads your memory without you.

What DejaVu can’t do

  • If someone forces you to use your finger, they will see your memory. Keep less if that is a risk for you.
  • Software already spying on your Mac could see your screen anyway, including while you look back.
  • What you export is no longer protected by your Mac. Keep exports somewhere safe.

For personal use only

DejaVu is built for your own Mac and your own use. It has no features for watching other people: no team console, no remote viewing, no company deployment. Installing it on someone else’s Mac without their consent is forbidden by our terms and, in most countries, by law.

Verifiable

DejaVu is signed and notarized by Apple. A detailed security white paper will be published at launch. To report a vulnerability, write to [email protected].
